Comedy/tragedy theater masks are reinterpreted as Haman and Queen Esther, key characters in the Purim story. Indeed, the holiday commemorates Esther’s foiling of Haman’s plot to destroy the Jewish people in ancient Persia. Skits recounting Esther’s triumph are performed to celebrate Purim, and everyone (of age) is encouraged to drink until the distinction between good and evil blurs — hence the mind-altering color scheme.
